How to Prepare Your Roof for Incoming Storms

May 28, 2019

Northeast Ohio is no stranger to severe storms and bad weather. When thunderstorms, heavy winds and rain roll into our area, it is important that your home is prepared for the weather. Here are a few tips to keep your roofing system as safe as possible during a storm:

Make sure your gutters are clear of debris:

Gutters have an important job of protecting siding, landscaping and foundation by leading rain water away from your home. Gutters heavy with debris and water that cannot drain will become heavy and can break away causing your roofing system to fail. During a storm, if your gutters fail to do their job your home can be at risk of avoidable damage.

Keeping your gutters clean and ensuring they drain properly before a storm hits will prevent gutter failure when you need them to work the most.

Trim Tree Branches That Are Close To Your Home:

Tree branches that are close to your home can swing in the wind and smack the roof and siding. Heavy branches can break and fall onto your home causing dents and other expensive damages. It is best to remove trees that are too close to the home as a fallen tree can cause significant damage.

At the very least, tree branches should be trimmed to be at least 3 – 8 feet away from the home to diminish the likelihood of tree damage to your roof.

Review Insurance Policy:

When your home is damaged from hail, wind or debris the first thing you should do is contact your insurance company to make a claim. Insurance companies will often cover repair costs from storm damages so it is important to make sure your do not have any coverage gaps in your policy.
