Essential vs Non-essential work during COVID-19 from the employees at Coates Bros. Roofing

April 6, 2020

Many of our customers already know that Coates Bros. has decided to lay off the majority of our employees and focus on emergency and essential work after Governor Mike Dewine put out the Ohio Stay at Home Order. We also know that being a construction company, we had the option of staying open and continuing to work. However, we have to prioritize the safety of our employees and our customers during this time of uncertainty. That being said, we want to make sure all of our customers understand what we are able and not able to do during this time.

Our decision to lay off a majority of Coates Bros. employees was tough. However, it was based on the recommendations made by our state’s government. Lt. Governor Jon Husted highlighted Section 13 of the Stay at Home Order which reads businesses should conduct “the minimum necessary activities to maintain the value of the businesses’ inventory, preserve the condition of the business’s physical plant and equipment, ensure security, process payroll and employee benefits, or related functions (View the full order here).” Our Lt. Governor emphasized that businesses should conduct only the vital needs. We know we made the right decision to send home almost all our employees for their own safety and the safety of our community.

Coates Bros. Roofing has relied heavily on the advice and guidance of Lt. Governor Husted. We encourage other small businesses to follow his lead and do our part to flatten the curve. It was his influence that helped us make the decision to keep our employees safe at home and we’ve received so much positive feedback from our families, friends and customers.

We want you all to remember we are still conducting emergency jobs when needed. If you experience severe roof damage or a leak that is causing substantial damage comes up, please call us so we can help you. If you need a basic repair or want an estimate for a replacement job, feel free to contact us. Just know that we may have to push those jobs back until things go back to normal.

We can’t thank everyone enough for their patience as we work through this together. Many businesses are hurting right now, but it’s our responsibility to do what is right for the community, not just the business. The right thing to do is stay home.

Safety is always first!
