3 Things to be mindful of when starting your exterior spring cleaning from the exterior contractors at Coates Bros. Roofing

March 16, 2021

Spring is finally starting to take hold here in Northeast Ohio! While we’ve had a lot of rain lately, but the sunshine is just around the corner which means many people are going to start working outside and cleaning up their landscape. While we always encourage home owners to take care of their yards and landscapes, there are definitely some precautions to take!

We have two rules here at Coates Bros.; 1. Safety is always first and 2. Never EVER cut a corner. These are rules that everyone should follow both at work and in their personal lives, and especially when working outside! To help homeowners with this task, we’re sharing three tips to keep in mind when you start your spring cleaning.

1.       Start with cleaning your gutters!

We know this is not a fun task, but it’s important! Especially as we enter the heavy rain season. Clean gutters can protect your home from water damage that could require costly repairs such as damage to your shingles or siding if they fall. They also can leak if they are clogged which often leads to leaks at your home’s foundation! If you get this task finished first, the rest will seem easy.

2.       Clear your yard of debris like stones and branches before you mow.

This is another tedious task, but it’s one of the most important steps to take. If you have large debris in your yard like stones and large branches, they can become projectiles when you mow. Trust us – we have seen it happen all too many times! Debris can also dull your mower blades. Safe yourself the trouble and clean up your yard before you mow!

3.       Trim down bushes and shrubs that are close to your home to protect your siding.

Many homes have decorative trees and shrubs that sit up next to the siding. While these can be beautiful, don’t let them go wild! Your siding could be damaged if these plants are too close to the siding. Branches can cause cracks in the siding and shady leaves can allow moss and mold to grow. Be sure to trim these plants so they are not touching the siding.

These are just a few things to keep in mind when you start working on your exterior spring cleaning. If you notice an issue with your shingles or gutters while you’re working, give us a call!
